Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: I am registered as an Independent (Unaffiliated). Can I vote for Phil and Eugene in the June 2 Primary?

A: Yes, but the rules depend on how you vote. In New Jersey, Unaffiliated voters can vote in the Primary Election, but you must declare a party.

If voting by Mail: Due to updated state law, Unaffiliated voters will not automatically receive a Primary mail-in ballot. You must first submit a Party Declaration form to the County Clerk (by May 26, 2026) to receive your ballot.

If voting In-Person (Early or Election Day): You can simply declare your party right at the polls and vote on the machine.

Q: If I request a Mail-In Ballot, can I still vote on a machine on Election Day?

A: No. If the pollbook shows you have been issued a Mail-In Ballot, you cannot cast a standard vote on the machine. If you show up to a polling place (or an Early Voting location), you will be required to vote using a Provisional Ballot. This ballot will only be counted after the county verifies that your original Mail-In Ballot was not also submitted. Note: If you want to permanently switch back to machine voting, you must actively “opt-out” of the Vote-By-Mail list with the County Clerk.

Q: Is my voter registration up to date?

A: If you have moved, changed your name, or haven’t voted in several years, you should verify your status. You can Check Your Voter Registration Status Here.

Q: How do I know my Mail-In Ballot was actually received and counted?

A: The State of New Jersey provides a tracking system. You can set up an account and Track Your Ballot Here to see exactly when it was received and accepted by the county.

Q: I am currently registered as a Republican. Can I switch and ask for the Democrat ballot at the polls on Primary Day?

A: No. New Jersey is a closed primary state. If you are already registered with a specific political party, state law prohibits you from switching parties at the polling place on Primary Election Day. However, it is important to note that during the General Election in November, you are completely free to vote for any candidate on the ballot, regardless of your registered party affiliation.
